Wellness Initiative Purpose
The University of Arkansas (UARK) Wellness Initiative highlights how collaborative
campus wide programming supports all aspects of growth and wellbeing. Providing wellness
opportunities engages the UA community in the recognition of a holistic model of health
that contributes to increased productivity and success.
There are many definitions of wellness, yet all seem to agree that it is multidimensional
and intertwines all aspects of life into a feeling of health and well-being (Seppala,
Nykanen, & Ruotsalainen, 2012). In order to achieve overall wellness, it is vital
to recognize and focus on the differences of each element (Kirkland, 2014). This model
seeks to identify eight dimensions that holistically define the UARK Wellness Initiative,
which will focus on the cultivation and balance of all eight dimensions.
Wellness initiatives are essential vehicles for colleges and universities to effectively facilitate the dissemination of knowledge and raise awareness about what it means to be healthy and well (Kirkland, 2014). Wellness programs are designed to utilize positive changes in attitude and behavior to bring about co-curricular wellness through activities in and beyond the classroom (Field & Louw, 2012; Armstrong, 2010).
The benefits of wellness programs are extensive regardless of age, health, or income level (Miller et al., 2016). These benefits include increasing productivity and performance in the workplace, job satisfaction and self-esteem (Miller et al., 2016). By implementing the UARK Wellness Initiative, we intend to create a safer and healthier campus focused on the entire health and wellness of the campus community.
